Day 10 – Vernal to Rangely

Our 10th day sees us leaving Utah for a new state. Our destination for tonight is Rangely, Colorado a distance of approximately 52 miles. After the hardest day of PAC tour yesterday, today was a recovery ride. We got a lie-in and did not do breakfast until 7.30am. We departed at 8am for a leisurely ride into our fifth state.

Our first SAG stop came after an easy, mainly downhill 21 miles. For the uninitiated, a SAG stop is when we meet up with one of the vans for a chance to refill water bottles, grab some snacks or a quick drink of pop. This gives us the extra energy to carry on to the next one. SAG stops tend to be between 20 and 40 miles apart depending on how difficult the terrain is.

The scenery as we moved into Colorado became progressively more mountainous.

Just before crossing the border we passed thorugh the town of Dinosaur. So named becuase the whole area is littered with sites where important fossil remians have been found over the years, particularly the big Jurassic dinosaurs such as the Brontosaurus and the Stegosaurus.

The town does however play on the association a bit…

We completed our days ride by lunch time and had a picnic in the local park before going to our motel for some well earned R&R. A short walk around town later confirmed that Rangely is not really the sort of place that you might want to visit unless you had too. They did however do a nice line in billboard signs:-

Stats for the day:-

Climbing:-  1000ft
Temps: Mid 80’s

  1. Thanks for including comments and photo or BedRock Depot in Dinosaur, Colorado. In riding from Vernal, Utah to Rangely, Colorado, you crossed the border into Colorado 3 miles west of Dinosaur on US 40.

Have a great trip and be safe.
