Day 16 – Amarillo to Shamrock

After the previous 3 days big mileages and last nights frivolities, today was a welcome short day at only 94 miles. The whole team pretty much treated this as a recovery ride and as such no one was in any hurry to leave after breakfast which was itself put back until 7am to give everyone a lie in. Todays destination was Shamrock, unsurprisingly with a name like that a town of Irish ancestry though still in Texas.

Later on in the day the terrain became slightly less boring and we joined part of the old route 66 which was one of the earliest paved roads right across America and still holds iconic status.

As we entered Shamrock, we passed one of the original Route 66 Art Deco style buildings which has now been restored as a Historical marker. The place was called the U Drop Inn and originally was a gas station and motel.

Towards the end of the day the temperature was getting very high and this was confirmed as we rode past one of the many street signs.

Temp in Shamrock topped out at 96f
